چکیده

Multi-colour photometry of four variable supergiants in the LMC and SMC, viz. R 85, R 110, R 42 and R 45, is searched for periods, studied and discussed. The suspected LBV R 85 is undoubtedly an active LBV, though not as spectacular as R 110. Their microvariations superimposed on the S Dor-activity are analyzed as well as those exhibited by R 42 and R 45. Often, a period search is difficult because of the very complicated micro-variability. We suggest that this is caused by an intricate multi-cyclic behaviour combined with stochastic processes. The length of the strongest cyclicity in the power spectrum of R 42 (128 d) is of the order of the rotation periods of BA-type supergiants. In connection with our findings described in the present paper and the previous ones, we discuss various competing theoretical models on the instability of α Cyg variables, including the LBVs.

Light variations of massive stars ( α Cygni variables ) ?

Multi-colour photometry (Walraven system) of five superand hypergiants in the LMC, viz. R 74, R 78, HD 34664, R 84 and R 116, is searched for variability and periods, and discussed. Apart from R 84, of which the claimed variability in the past must be due to a number of faint field stars at the edge of the apertures, all are variable. R 74 and HD 34664 are weak-active LBVs with superimposed mic...

Constraints on Massive Star Formation : Cygnus OB 2 was always an Association

We examine substructure and mass segregation in the massive OB association Cygnus OB2 to better understand its initial conditions. Using a well understood Chandra X-ray selected sample of young stars we find that Cyg OB2 exhibits considerable physical substructure and has no evidence for mass segregation, both indications that the association is not dynamically evolved. Combined with previous k...

Optical and Supersoft X-ray Light Curve Models of Classical Nova V2491 Cygni: a New Clue to the Secondary Maximum

V2491 Cygni (Nova Cygni 2008 No.2) was detected as a transient supersoft X-ray source with the Swift XRT as early as 40 days after the outburst, suggesting a very massive white dwarf (WD) close to the Chandrasekhar limit. We present a unified model of near infrared, optical, and X-ray light curves for V2491 Cyg, and have estimated, from our best-fit model, the WD mass to be 1.3±0.02 M⊙ with an ...

The Keck Aperture Masking Experiment: Multiwavelength Observations of Six Mira Variables

The angular diameters of six oxygen-rich Mira-type long-period variables have been measured at various NIR wavelengths using the aperture-masking technique in an extensive observing program from 1997 January to 2004 September. These data sets span many pulsation cycles of the observed objects and represent the largest study of multiwavelength, multiepoch interferometric angular diameter measure...

The Hungarian-made Automated Telescope network (HATnet) is an ongoing project to detect transiting extra-solar planets using small aperture, robotic telescopes. In this paper we present the results from using image subtraction photometry to reduce a crowded stellar field (chosen to overlap with the planned Kepler mission). We obtained I-band light curves for 98,000 objects in a 67-square-degree...
